Confirmed: Pope Leo XIV has appointed Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, 60, as Metropolitan Archbishop of Chieti-Vasto. The move brings Gambetti’s tenure as Archpriest of St Peter’s Basilica, Vicar General for Vatican City and President of the Fabric of St Peter to an end. His successor at the Vatican has not yet been announced. Advocate General Laila Medina at the European Court of Justice has issued an opinion in a Belgian case that could have wider implications across the EU for how churches handle requests to erase baptismal records under the GDPR. It is “sad,” he said, that these Catholics are not allowed to celebrate Mass in St. Peter’s. At the same time, Santa Maria Maggiore is the most important Marian church in Christendom. Both Pius V - who codified the traditional Mass for all time - and Francis - who restricted it - are buried there. Bishop Schneider intends to pray with the faithful for liturgical peace and for the traditional Mass to be celebrated again without restrictions.
